Who IS MARIE CONLON?

Marie Conlon is an American illustrator, graphic designer, and instructor currently based in Utah.

Beginning her career almost 2 decades ago as a graphic designer, she knows first-hand that today’s marketing and design simply isn’t the same as it was before. The game has changed! Print is no longer the only resource available, digital has taken the forefront!

Marie’s designs in both print and digital have been used in many industries including promotional, real estate, automotive, fashion, cosmetics, entertainment, retail and more. Though her personal style can be described as cheerful and full of color, she’s been able to demonstrate flexibility across industries. Emoting through design with style range from classic and elegant, rustic and vintage, and even modern and minimal.

Marie has won admirers on a global scale due to her signature illustration style highlighting smooth shapes, charming characters, and bold color pallets. By following the child within, her illustrations can be used in editorial/magazines, casual mobile games and apps, packaging illustration, apparel, home goods, tabletop/card games, greeting cards, and children’s story books. Her love for story telling and inviting viewers into a new world has lead her to expand her career to illustration.

As a mentor, Marie has always loved sharing what she has learned along the way. She has a unique way to relate to people and helping them learn and understand without being overwhelming. Marie has recently launched online courses and free resources made available through her website and YouTube channel.

Illustration

As a child I remember sitting under my father’s drafting table and watching him create some of the most amazing and magical illustrated projects. Bomber jackets for veterans like himself with hand painted pin-up girls and military aircraft. Signs for local businesses that he’d carved by hand and embellished with gold leaf. Or the occasional book cover or life-like portraits.

I loved illustrations that were bright and bold, capturing my attention from miles away. The idea of creating my own world through drawings intrigued me. Each visit to the local library with my family, I would find the most beautifully illustrated books to bring home and then spend days attempting to narrate the story through my own reimagined illustrations.

Some of my favorite artists were Mary Blair, one of the first female illustrators employed for the Walt Disney Company. Her colorful and whimsical concept art for “Alice in Wonderland”, and “Cinderella” set the stage for my own love of color!

Character designers like Toby Bluth, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston helped me find my style.

Graphic Design

My journey into graphic design started in 1998 building websites using HTML and graphics created in programs that would eventually make way for industry standards like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Projects included graphics for my band, for local retail advertising, and fan websites for some of my favorite musicians.

This hobby eventually lead me to chase a formal education at Provo College in 2004 majoring in Graphic Design. By 2008 I attended Utah Valley University to study Art and Visual Communications. I enjoyed my educational experience, but most of my experience has been on the job as I have now spent 16 years working in marketing and graphic design.

My work included clients such as Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, Utah where I assisted them with a complete rebrand and social media marketing. I have experience in brand identity, promotional material, social media marketing, website and landing page UI design, industrial and directional signage, and photography.
